Radiosurgery
What is radiosurgery?
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a focused radiation treatment for the treatment of tumors, diseases, or functional and vascular pathologies. It is generally successful from the first session, and in some cases, up to five sessions.
This treatment was developed to avoid open surgery, primarily for treating cranial lesions. It is therefore colloquially described as "surgery without a scalpel," as it is a focused radiation treatment that is noninvasive and painless.
The main objective of radiosurgery is to concentrate high doses of radiation on the treatment volume and limit it to surrounding healthy tissue. This requires high dosimetric and mechanical precision during treatment.
Radiosurgery also helps improve the outcome of certain radiation therapy treatments, as in these cases, it is possible to apply higher doses with greater precision, thus avoiding damage to healthy tissue.
