La mayor\u00eda consisten en episodios de diarrea, n\u00e1usea o v\u00f3mito y algunas con dolor abdominal.<br \/>Las personas que tienen un sistema de defensa fuerte, logran controlarlas en algunos d\u00edas. Algunas personas pueden presentar variaciones de estas infecciones en una forma m\u00e1s severa, por ejemplo con fiebre (temperatura mayor a 38\u00b0C), escalofr\u00edos, dolores articulares, dolor abdominal intenso, o presencia de sangrado o moco en las evacuaciones. Cuando la diarrea se presenta con mucha intensidad, el n\u00famero o la cantidad de evacuaciones puede deshidratar a una persona y requerir un ingreso hospitalario.<\/p>\n<p>Las infecciones gastrointestinales m\u00e1s comunes son la gastroenteritis aguda, fiebre tifoidea, y otras como la infecci\u00f3n por el virus de la hepatitis A. Todas ellas se adquieren por el consumo de alimentos mal preparados, sin suficiente limpieza o tiempo de cocci\u00f3n, o por la ingesta de agua que est\u00e1 contaminada por bacterias, virus u otros agentes infecciosos.<\/p>\n<p>Los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer tienen un sistema inmune que puede estar m\u00e1s delimitado por medicamentos, quimioterapias, debilidad, desnutrici\u00f3n o la misma enfermedad tumoral. Pueden presentar infecciones de mayor severidad o duraci\u00f3n que las personas con un sistema inmune fuerte. La principal causa de hospitalizaciones o complicaciones graves por una infecci\u00f3n con diarrea, es la deshidrataci\u00f3n. Sin tratamiento, esto puede causar problemas m\u00e1s graves como falla renal, estado de choque o muerte.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>\u00bfC\u00f3mo se puede prevenir infecciones gastrointestinales durante \u00e9pocas de mayor calor o temporadas de primavera y verano?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>Un paso esencial es la limpieza de las manos de las personas que ingieren y las que preparan los alimentos. Es importante desinfectar las manos antes de comer y preparar alimentos y tambi\u00e9n despu\u00e9s de ir al ba\u00f1o. Los antis\u00e9pticos m\u00e1s recomendables contienen alcohol-gel en concentraciones del 70%; pero un simple lavado de manos con agua y jab\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n reduce el riesgo. En segundo lugar, es mejor preferir lugares para comer donde los alimentos est\u00e9n adecuadamente limpios, frescos y desinfectados. Finalmente, seleccionar alimentos con un adecuado nivel de cocci\u00f3n y evitar el consumo de alimentos crudos mal preparados o mal conservados tambi\u00e9n evita infecciones. Evita alimentos<br \/>que se han congelado y descongelado repetidamente, han estado expuestos al aire ambiente por periodos prolongados de tiempo, y evita infecciones gastrointestinales. Finalmente, vacunas como la vacuna contra la hepatitis A previene la infecci\u00f3n por este virus, incluso despu\u00e9s de tener contacto con alguien infectado.
